History of SWAN

Southern Women’s Action Network (SWAN) was established in 1996 by a group of women living on the Mornington Peninsula and in the Frankston environs. In 2026 SWAN celebrated its 30th Anniversary, making it one of the nation’s longest running volunteer-run community organisations led by women, that still maintains its original structure.

The book When Women Meet, which brings the SWAN history up to 2022, was published in 2023. An updated 30th Anniversary edition that includes the community development and social justice advocacy work undertaken by SWAN between 2023-2026 will be published in mid 2026. Pen Portraits explores the first 10 years of SWAN and individual stories of some of its members.

In 2006, the booklet  “A Just Peninsula” was funded by the Mornington Peninsula Shire in a joint project with Good Shepherd Peninsula, to celebrate social justice and access and equity principles and policies.  It includes interviews with two of SWAN’s founding members who explain how SWAN began.
